KTP (Potassium Titanyl Phosphate) crystal is a non-linear optical material that has applications in both commercial and military lasers.  It is most widely used for frequency doubling of Nd:YAG lasers and others Nd-doped lasers. This is due to its properties of having large non-linear optical coefficient, spectral bandwidth and wide angular bandwidth etc.


KTP crystals are highly transparent for wavelengths between 350-2700nm while at 4500nm, it is largely opaque.  Other uses include being used for optical parametric oscillator in the IR region up to 4µm due to its high damage threshold.

            Fig. 1 represents Type 2 SHG tuning curve of KTP in x-y plane. In x-y 

            plane the slope d(Dk)/dq is small. This corresponds to quasi-angular 

            noncritical  phase mat-ching, which ensures the double advantage of a 

            large acceptance angle and a small walk off.

Fig. 2 represents Type 2 SHG tuning curve of KTP in x-z plane. in x-z 

plane the slope d(Dk)/dq is almost zero for wavelengths in the range 

1.5-2.5 m m and this corresponds to quasi-wavelength noncritical phase 

matching, which ensures a large spectral acceptance. Wavelength noncrit-ical phase matching is highly desir-able for frequency conversion of short

pulses.
