MgF₂(Magnesium Fluoride) is an optical material that is used in infrared applications as it has ruggerness, durability and low absorption. The crystal has natural birefringence and is useful transmission range and infrared. MgF₂ transmits well into the VUV region at the hydrogen Lyman-alpha line and beyond, like LiF. The crystal is heavily used in UV optics and is an excellent material for excimer laser applications. Other applications include retardation plates and polarizing elements.
