MgF2 Rochon Polarizer

Rochon Polarizer is used to split an arbitrary polarized incoming light beam into two orthogonal and polarized outgoing light beams. The ordinary ray will continue along the same optical axis of the incoming light beam, whereas the extraordinary ray will have a slight deviation in its angle. This is dependent on the wavelength of the incoming light beam as well as the material of the Rochon Polarizer. The output beams have a high polarization extinction ratio accordingly to their material.


MgF2 is a birefringent material which allows transmission across a wide range of wavelength from 0.19-6.5um from UV to NIR region. It has a relatively low refractive index which is around 1.3-1.48. Using a VUV grade MgF2 material, the C-axis oriented is used to minimize birefringence. MgF2 is also twice as hard as CaF2 which makes it durable and is resistant to thermal and mechanical shock.
