LBO Nonlinear Optical Crystal.jpg

BBO(Barium Borate) is a versatile non-linear crystal with various properties such as high broad phase-matching range, wide transmission region between 190-3500nm , large effective second-harmonic-generation(SHG) that is much greater than KDP crystal, and high damage threshold.


The crystal can exist in two forms, the α form and the β form, with the beta phase converting into the alpha phase at ~925°C. Both phases are birefringent. BBO has uses in frequency conversion of laser sources, optical parametric oscillators, and in electro- optical applications from the near IR to the deep UV region. The crystal shown is the β form.
